The Truth About Home Burglary In Australia

There are a lot of facts, figures, and statistics floating around the internet about the number of home burglaries, but how many of these are relevant to Australia? So many of these facts seem to be from overseas so we thought we would see what we could find about things closer to home.

How Safe Are Australian Homes?

Not as safe as we would like to think. According to the Australian Institute of Criminology, home burglary is one of the most widespread crimes in Australia. In fact, there were over 335,000 break-ins reported between 2009-2010. That also puts Australia above the international average. The Australian Institute of Criminology puts the international average at 1.8%, while Australia currently sits at about 2.5%.

What Are Thieves Taking?

Money, at 31.4%, was the most commonly stolen object, which is hardly surprising. Followed by laptops, with 26%, then jewellery at 22.6%, again not a great surprise. Obviously, it’s not recommended to keep large amounts of money in your home, but where else are you likely to keep your jewellery? Especially when you consider that many items of jewellery hold a significantly high sentimental than monetary value.

What Puts Burglars Off?

A survey conducted in WA of police detainees found this:

A dog: not necessarily big, but noisy (61.4%)
    Working sensor lights (22.8%)
    A functioning alarm system (49.1%)
    Lights on inside (19.3)
    Security grills on doors/windows (19%)
An unknown, or unfamiliar area (14%)
High visibility from the road (14%)
    Gates (12.3%)

When Do Burglaries Happen?

According to the Guardian, most home burglaries in Australia happen during the day when homeowners or residents are likely at work. October also appears to be the most likely month to suffer a break in. Although, there seems to be constancy from August right through to December.

How To Keep Your Home Safe.

There are so many options for home security systems these days. At CDMI Services we recommend going all in and getting a home automation capable security system. First, with NBN arriving in Australia a lot of old alarm systems aren’t compatible anymore. So why not upgrade. Secondly, home automation, smart homes, are the way of the future. Stay one step ahead of any would-be burglars and take advantage of our exclusive 3 months free monitoring offer before Christmas. Offer ends December 25th 2016.
